The Road to Mars

Thanks to NASA for featuring another one of my image as their (APOD) “Astronomy Picture of the Day”.

Sometimes you just need to follow “The Road to Mars”!

Capture last May in Moab, Utah. The Road to Mars was beautiful, The Bright Red Planet Mars, as seen at the end of a road in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah.

Captured while looking south at 4:36am on 05-16-2018 and you can see the Milky Way in the upper right with Saturn just below the Milky Way as well. I used Low level lighting for the road & road side scenery. The Faint Green Glow on the Horizon just below Mars is called Natural Air Glow, The Amber glow on the Horizon in the lower right is the Light Pollution glow from the town of Moab, Utah.

California Nebula

Inside the California Nebula Complex

Up Close & inside the California Nebula Complex.

The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It is so named because it appears to resemble the outline of the US State of California on long exposure photographs. It is almost 2.5° long on the sky and, because of its very low surface brightness, it is extremely difficult to observe visually.

The nearby energetic O7 star, xi Persei is responsible for the fluorescence of the nebula, due to excitation of the Hβ line. The California Nebula is also known as Sharpless 220 and is located about 1,000 light years from Earth. The California Nebula was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884.

This is my extreme close-up shot of it, literally looking inside near the center section the California Nebula Complex, you can also see the elusive black Jelly Fish, an opaque dark black molecular dust cloud near the bottom. A tremendous amount of details are visible within the California Nebula cloud..
I captured this image from my backyard observatory in Dayton, Ohio over 3 nights 09-17, 09-21, & 09-22 of 2017 of light gathering for a total of 7 hours & 15 minutes of exposure time, using my 6 inch diameter F5, Newtonian Scope & a ZWO 174MM cooled Cmos camera in HA, S2, O3 lines Mapped out to RGB.

Total Solar Eclipse 2017

The Total Solar Eclipse with Earthshine Moon

Here is my Final Master Piece Image showing The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse during Totality in a 5 image HDR, High Dynamic Range.
Blow it full screen and look at the details. also stand back from the Monitor and check it out from a distance too, not just close-up. It looks 3D to me…with the Earth-shine Moon, you can barely see the moons surface features, due to reflected light from Earth, The suns edge with Pink Prominence’s, with Inner Coronal loops and full outer Corona Details. The Brightest star in Leo “Regulus” is in the Upper left of the Frame. This is my best Totality image to date! The Draco Galaxy Triplet,

Draco Galaxy Triplet!

The Draco Galaxy Triplet, 100 Million Light Years Away in the Constellation of Draco!
If you explore the wide field image you will see several other distant NGC & PGC galaxies.
The Draco Triplet from Top to bottom are NGC-5985 Seyfert type Face on Spiral Galaxy, NGC-5982 Elliptical Galaxy, & NGC-5981 Edge on Spiral Galaxy.
5.5 inch Newt. Scope & Modified Canon Rebel Xsi, ISO 1600, 24 x 5 minute subs stacked = 2 hour exposure total.

The Sagittarius Teapot & Spoon

The Constellation of Sagittarius, The Teapot & Spoon near the Galactic Center of our Milky Way Galaxy…also visible above the Teapot is M22, M25, M8, M20, & M7 on the Right edge. i kept the exposure short, so I wouldn’t blur the house too much while tracking.  The Teapot Pattern is to the right of the Beach House, and the Spoon is Above the House.

The dotted line at the bottom is an aircraft flying over the ocean.

Jupiter on 04-18-2016

Jove the Gas Giant Planet!
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System.
It is a giant planet with a mass one-thousandth that of the Sun, but two and a half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined.
Basically you can fit all the planets into Jupiter at the same time with lots of room to spare.

Jupiter rotates every 9 hours &  56 minutes, that is roughly a 10 hours day compared to our 24 hour day here on Earth.
It takes Jupiter 11.86 years to orbit the Sun once, compared to 365 days it takes Earth to orbit our Sun once.
Currently it is 442.8 million miles from Earth…this changes constantly as both Earth and Jupiter orbit the Sun.

Jupiter’s Atmosphere is the largest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System.
It is mostly made up of molecular hydrogen and helium in roughly solar proportions; other chemical compounds are present only in small amounts and include methane, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and water.

You can find Jupiter with just your eyes nearly straight over head around 10:00pm, it will be the brightest thing straight over head, so go out and take a look tonight, you can even see its clouds bands & 4 Galilean moons with a pair of Binoculars or small telescope held steady or placed on a tripod.

I captured this image of Jupiter on 04-18-2016 centered on (17th 10:26pm EST)  02:26 U.T., We finally got a good night of stable seeing 7/10 from my backyard Observatory in Dayton, Ohio. I was able to crank the magnification up a bit, by using the 3x barlow.  I used my 8 inch diameter(old Orange tube C8) SCT telescope, 3x Cemax Barlow & and a QHY5IIL Mono CCD camera, Astronomik RGB Filters, IFW Filter wheel, Registax6 2400 RGB frames stacked & wavelets, MaximDL for RGB Alignment, Adobe CS 2015 final processing.

I’m happy with the cloud top details…considering we don’t get the greatest seeing here in the Midwest!
I did notice that the Great Red Spot is not so Red anymore, more like Salmon colored Spot…but it still was cool to see some detail within the GRS & cloud top details!
